REHA’s Early Mission: Create Competition To Reduce Rising Health Insurance Costs

In 1992, many employers in the Washington County area were being forced to cope with health insurance rates that were intolerably high. One health insurer dominated the region, with more than a 90% market share. No competition meant double-digit increases for these local employers.

The region’s leaders – including businesses, hospitals, doctors and union groups – banded together in an effort to introduce competition into the local health care market. The result was REHA – a private, non-profit corporation that represents the collective interests of employers. Through this unprecedented collaboration, they used their buying power to improve their community and their bottom lines.

REHA sought proposals from health insurance carriers and ultimately partnered with HealthAmerica/HealthAssurance. The REHA relationship helped HealthAmerica/HealthAssurance negotiate competitive contracts with area hospitals and physicians. In turn, REHA member companies have enjoyed a program that has helped to control health care premiums. The competition infused by REHA has saved employers millions of dollars.

Today, REHA's mission remains intact, to stimulate meaningful competition in the region for the benefit of local businesses, their employees and family members.
